Santorini History

Santorini Island was formed by a series of volcanic eruptions. The first settlers of the island named it Strogyli (meaning round), due to its round shape, and then Kallisti (the beautiful one). Around 1550 - 1500 B.C. the violent volcanic eruption took place, submerging a large part of the island beneath the Aegean waters, creating the famous Caldera. The eruption wiped out all life on the island, including the Minoan city of Akrotiri, which is believed to be connected to the Lost City of Atlantis. During the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C. more eruptions followed and the isles of Thirassia, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni emerged on the surface of the sea in the Caldera area. The name Thira is derived from the name of leader of the Dorian settlers. Later, during the Venetian Rule, the island was named Santorini, after the Church of Saint Irene, located on the island.

Kamari is a tourist hotspot situated on the southeast side of Santorini. The area is famous for its beautiful beach that extends all the way to Monolithos and for its green landscape.

Santorini Sightseeing & Attractions

While on Santorini, we suggest you plan some time in your schedule to see some of the island’s sites. From Kamari you can begin your hike to the Ancient City of Thira to see the ruins of the Roman Agora, the Theater, the Baths and the Temple of Apollo. A must during your vacation on Santorini Island is a visit to the well-preserved Minoan City in Akrotiri. The capital of the island offers many important museums, such as the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum and the Prehistoric Museum. In Fira you can also see the Venetian Manor Gizi and the two cathedrals (one orthodox – one catholic). We also recommend a day trip to the isles of Thirassia, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, to explore the volcano and to swim in the warm waters of the area.

Santorini Beaches

Kamari’s pride and joy is its fantastic black sandy beach, which is considered the best beach on the island. The nearby beaches of Monolithos, Perissa and Perivolos, as well as the Red and White Beaches in Akrotiri, are also exquisite, with volcanic sand and pebbles.

Local Cuisine & Nightlife of Santorini

A trip to Santorini is not complete without trying the island’s famous local delicacies such as fresh seafood dishes, fava (lentil dip), tomato balls, sun-dried cherry tomatoes, fried white eggplants, zucchini balls and superb Santorinian wine. Kamari is positively packed with tavernas, restaurants, clubs, bars and cafes that cater to your night time entertainment.
